As promised, Marvel Studios dropped a brand new sneak peek of Black Panther during the College Football Playoff National Championship game last night. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film sees the return of Chadwick Boseman, who reprises the role he first played in Captain America: Civil War.
It will be our first look at Wakanda, a once peaceful secret nation going through political strife now that their king has been killed. So it is up to the once young T’Challa (Boseman) to rise up and become king and keep the throne before it can be taken by the dangerous Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). Check out the latest spot below.
While it is a sneak peek of Black Panther, there are a couple of things that make it stand out from the trailers.
“You’re telling me that the king of a third world country runs around in a bulletproof catsuit?” asks Everett Ross (Martin Freeman)?
To which, Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis) responds, with a devious smile, “Why don’t you ask him yourself? Because he’s right outside.” He then snidely clicks his tongue then says “Bingo.”
It’s just a little more of the exchange between the two that we saw in the first trailer.
We also see that T’CHalla is a very humble king as he requests his younger sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright), to stop calling him by that title.
As we see T’Challa walk out of a Wakandian airship we hear, “The Black Panther lives,” from Okoye (Danai Gurira), who appears to be very happy with his return.
While Zuri (Forest Whitaker) warns T’Challa that “a war is coming,” the young prince is unphased by the threats and says “let them come.”
“I hope you’re ready bro,” says Killmonger. “Because I am just getting started.” In the comics, Killmonger’s father was hard pressed to work with Klaw, and after his death, the family was exiled. So it appears that Erik has returned to Wakanda with the intent to overthrow the king.
Plus it looks like Black Panther won’t just be set in the fictional Wakanda. It appears to be a global film as there are some exterior shots of South Korea in one of the pivotal action sequences. Which makes sense since the film was shot there.
In the final seconds of the sneak peek, we hear Killmonger say “Your weapons, your secrets, they are all mine now,” which then leads up to him revealing his own version of the Black Panther suit, which is the traditional black with hints of gold, rather than purple.
It all ends with the usual climatic shots, the warriors clashing, the title character escaping death by jumping from an out of control car to another one being safely driven by an ally. While we have seen it before, it should be way more exciting to see it in full context.
Black Panther also stars Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Angela Bassett.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
