4. A new character is joining the rebellion
Kelly Marie Tran will play Rose: a maintenance worker who is part of the resistance “I can’t wait for you to meet her,” said the actor at the panel for The Last Jedi.
Rian Johnson added, “She’s pretty rad. For me growing up, I was watching Luke Skywalker be this unlikely hero – the notion that anyone can step out of where they are and become a hero – Rose isn’t a soldier, she’s not looking to be a hero. She gets pulled into this adventure with Finn and Kelly just embodies that.”
5. Rey could be Luke’s daughter after all???!!!!
Don’t do this to us, Skywalker!
6. Mark Hamill has written his own backstory for Luke Skywalker
Hamill revealed, “In Episode 7, you discover Luke is a hermit on this island and there’s so much unsaid about where he’s been and what he’s done.”
“Actors like to write their own backstories… I made it up myself and tried to show it to JJ Abrams, but he basically patted me on the head, gave me a cookie and made me go away.”
7. And we might not get more detail about what he’s been up to after all this time
“He’s an important part to the overall arc of the saga, and there’s a lot of mystery around him, even within the film, so you have to make up your own backstory,” said Hamill.
8. But Luke *will* be a major part of Episode 8
Kathleen Kennedy promised at Star Wars Celebration that Luke Skywalker will be crucial to the movie, “He is so significantly important to this next film”. Of course, he’s the focus of the newly unveiled teaser poster. THE MYSTERY! WE CAN’T COPE!
9. Carrie Fisher worked on rewriting the script
Writer–director Rian Johnson revealed that as well as starring in the new movie, Carrie Fisher worked on rewriting the script with him: “I love her so much man, and I connected with her first and foremost as a writer.”
“She’s a brilliant writer with an incredible mind. I’d go to her house and we’d sit on her bed for hours going through the script, and we’d have these stream of consciousness, jazz poetry-style ad lib sessions and at the end of it we’d have this four word line of dialogue which was the distillation of that.”
10. Rey meeting Luke might be a disaster
‘I actually can tell you some things,” Daisy Ridley teased some details of what will happen in the new movie, after Rey meets Luke at the end of The Force Awakens, “In The Last Jedi we go deeper into Rey’s story.”
“What is very apparent from where we left off is Rey has a certain expectation as to what she might be getting from Luke and what that might entail… and as many people know, it’s difficult when you meet your heroes as it might not be what you expect,” revealed Ridley, “That’s quite a lot right?”
11. Finn will recover!
John Boyega revealed that our fave ex-stormtrooper will be on the mend after his injuries in The Force Awakens, “Finn definitely stood up for himself and caught an injury to the back. He’s recovering… He’s not playing this time!”
